In 1982 Lambert van Nistelrooij joined the Brabant States Group of the CDA. Between 1991 and 2003, he was a member of the Deputies of the North-Brabant Province where he among others was responsible for internationalisation.
Van Nistelrooij later became a member of the Dutch delegation to the Committee of the Regions in Brussels and Treasurer of the House of Dutch Provinces in Brussels. He was also Vice President of the Assembly of European Regions for some time.
In 2004 Lambert van Nistelrooij got elected as a Member of the European Parliament and he was re-elected in 2009 and 2014. He is a member of the EP Committee on Regional Development and a substitute member of the EP committee on Internal Market.
During his second mandate he was also engaged in energy and telecommunications in his role as a substitute member of the EP Committee on Industry, Research and Energy. Lambert van Nistelrooij also is the European Parliament Rapporteur and Negotiator for the European Structural Funds and the European Investment Fund (2014–2020).
