Vice President Policy & Society
Jan Adriaenssens is VP Policy & Society and part of the executive management team of iMinds. Previously he was Director Strategy & Innovation of the iMinds Digital Society research department. Jan holds a PhD in Mathematics from the University of Antwerp, and an MSc in Philosophy & Public Policy from the London School of Economics. After his studies, Jan started as coordinator of the Antwerp Doctoral School. He later gained policy experience as senior researcher with the Flemish Council for Science and Innovation (VRWI). Before joining iMinds, Jan worked at the office of the Flemish minister for Innovation — first as advisor and later as deputy chief of staff.
His session is about smart citizens in smart cities in smart regions. If we want to make our cities smarter, we need to understand the impact of technology on society, and the influence of society on technology. An interesting way to investigate this, is through (large scale and small scale) living labs, innovative business modelling and technology policy research. Especially in smart cities, there is a specific need as well for privacy, ethics, trust and security. We'll investigate how living labs can enable citizens to help their cities (and thus regions) to become smart — in a desirable way.
